Art Teachers and Mentors

Every morning I study one of my art books with my breakfast, hoping to channel the energy of that heavyweight artist into my work for the day.  Most of the artists are no longer living, and therefore unavailable for actual chat about my questions.  So I search the books, and when I can get to the living paintings by them, I do. Right now Morandi and the Metropolitan Seminars in Art, Portfolio 3 are on my table. This kind of study, besides my favorite– working constantly from nature/life— is a great teacher.

Luckily I also  have and have had some great living teachers/mentors and I thought today I’d give some recommendations in case you are åble to take a class from them at any point.

Stella Ehrich, Jaye Fox, Renee Bouchard, Steve Levin, Sarah Pike, Reza Pike, David Lane, Paul Katz, Anima Katz, Julia Morgan-Leamon, Brian Sweetland, and Ann Kremers are folks I’ve been lucky to learn formally (and informally) with so far.  Check out their various websites and work, and if you’re in the area—see if you can get into a workshop or class.  You won’t regreat it.

Blog Review

This review made my day.

“Perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise, coming from an award-winning artist, but this site looks good. If you want to know how to make a simple theme look great, look at this one.”

Just click on the image below to read more.

I do love my blog, and the website—all generated by working with April May!

New Words

Reblogged from phoebesmundo:

A short story…

A Very Long Embrace

There is a place high in the Alps where the frogs live more than twice as long as those at sea level.  I suppose it’s because of all the time spent under ice. That is why my mom moved us up here; preservation. Our whole conversation on the subject consisted of her lowering her super-model brow towards the floor and focusing her eyes up at me with a stern look, “You’ll thank me one day.” That was the last time any actual words passed between us.

The following story is by Phoebe Moriarty Lev, my beautiful daughter who is currently working and living in Patagonia.

RGH

All my posts are behind right now—-but give me some time and I’ll catch up.  This one should have been put out there late in the summer.

I’ve been purchasing paint from RGH paints in Albany, independent owned, makes his own paint….and the reds are out of this world.  The only additive is the stuff that keeps it from being too “ropey”.

The folks there are soooooooo incredibly patient and helpful—-you can take a canvas and test out colors (I did –comparing to swatches of other paints I use).  They encourage people to come and learn about the paint-making process and want us to be satisfied with their product. The prices are great if you tube the paint yourself (I love doing it—very satisfying and there are tons of videos on Youtube to show you how. You can look at them online, bu† if you’re in this area, I recommend you get directions to the place online (or the phone number), it’s hard to find/see from outside.  Tell him I sent you!

The only two colors I’ll caution are naples yellow (get the lemon ochre instead) and cerulean blue (a little dull).

Another wonderful artist……

Sally Apfelbaum recently curated an amazing exhibit of black and white works about weeds and wildness that I loved….unfortunately it’s over…..but now she’s part of a new exhibit called Arcadia that you will definitely want to check out:

Arcadia Now
Contemporary Art In Country
curated by Tom McGlynn

Christine Price Gallery
Castleton State College
Castleton, Vermont, 05735

April 11- May 15

Opening Reception with Artist Talk – Wednesday, April 13, 4:30-6:30

Gallery Hours Monday –Friday 9am-5pm

“Arcadia Now” invokes the idea of the pastoral past, and combines art in an ensemble vision of what that pastoral idea, or an idyllic place of remove, might look like in the present. Combining photography, painting, sculpture and video, the exhibition addresses issues of nature and human consequence on nature, beauty and banality, and the ideal and the real in both abstract and figurative terms. How do we “see” the country?

The artists participating in the show include:

Sally Apfelbaum
Tim Daly
Alisa Dworsky
Bill Doherty
Ken Ikeda
Justine Kurland
Nathaniel Lieb
Mary McDonnell
Rebecca Purdum
Kiki Smith
Fredrik Strid
Scott Walden
Tenesh Webber
James Welling
Aaron Williams

For more information contact: Tom McGlynn (802) 468- 6047 or William Ramage (802) 468-1266

The middle photo is of Lea, Judy and I at the Weeds and Wildness exhibit……This exhibit made me want to explore more pen and ink and even pencil in black and white….and it made me want to take more field trips with Sally, Judy and Lea.
