So good to be back at Wed night life drawing. When I don’t go every week, my artistic muscles get flabby.
pencil portrait of Anna
3 Stages of drawing from the model, pencil on canson cream drawing paper, 12″ x 18″, March 2011
This unfinished work on a portrait of Anna in pencil was done at our girl gang group, at three lessons from Jaye Fox. There is much to still resolve in the sketch, but the process of learning to make marks with the pencil was a good experience for me. Learning to make lines instead of blocking in big areas of color was a challenge. Heck, just learning to sharpen the pencil was a new adventure.I have always worked pretty intuitively and the extensive use of measurement, and utilizing a lot of conscious thought while working is something I’m realizing is difficult for me, but necessary for me to add the skills and options I desire in my painting repertoire.

In our class with Jaye Fox yesterday we worked on drawings of Anna for the second time. Clearly this drawing has a long way to go, but I learned some things yesterday, not the least of which was how to sharpen a pencil and how to utilize an anatomy book. I will practice making light marks with my pencil. It is quite possible I am learning a little bit of patience, as unlikely as that possibility seems.
Remember, if you are out and about this weekend—Anna’s play is happening in Dorset….I watched rehearsal last night and People in the Wind is definitely my new favorite play.
The pencils and I are getting to know each other. I’m trying not to break them and they are trying hard to teach me.
The following sketches represent
1-continued work at Kathy L’s place
2-second drawing lesson with our wonderful instructor, Jaye Fox, at Shelli’s studio, which we’ll continue to develop next Monday — the gorgeous model is Anna! The point system Jaye is teaching us is giving me fits, though I can see it will be useful in the end, just as it was in the shoe painting.
3- little sketches from Anna’s rehearsal last night for “People in the Wind”.
I am trying something new: Drawing with a pencil. It’s very challenging.
“Charlie” is the beginning of learning how to approach a portrait in pencil under the direction of instructor, Jaye Fox (11″ x 17, Canson classic cream drawing paper). The nudes are 6-12 minutes sketches (from my life drawing group on Wed nights) using graphite dust and pencil (9″ x 12″ sketchbook). The landscape sketches are the beginnings of a year long study at a friend’s home–a mill house. This view is from the back porch in the drizzle yesterday….
