Young woman in a white coat, 2010

oil on canvas, 2010 (wax medium and a little galkyd)

I have been trying to learn how to work with photographs, particularly these old family photos, to create paintings.  My friend and colleague, Shelli DuBoff, is great at it and today she came and helped me work on this painting by showing me how she looks for information in the photo.  I am still struggling, but watching the way Shelli really notes the small changes, the way she attends to detail, was both informative and scary for me.  I look forward to continuing to broaden my compositional possibilities by using reference material when painting solely from life isn’t possible—as in this old picture of my mom—and to learning how to deepen the skill of paying attention in the process, which is necessary to all artwork.
