Mill House-3 views

Long View, oil on board,  9.5″ x 18″, April 2011

Bridge view #1, Sunny Morning, oil on board, 12″ x 16″, April 2011.

Sometimes a painting is finished because it’s perfect just as is—as in the case with Long View.  And sometimes, the season is over, as with Bridge view #1, Cloudy Day.  The sunny morning bridge view is probably a bit of both.  But they are done, and my questions is always:  Does this painting have inner life?  And I am satisfied that they do, even if I’d like more time on them.  Nature rules on the timing issue, so I obviously defer.

I am loving painting at this mill house, and eager to get back to it this week.  When I am painting, I feel like myself, so I am good painting in the studio, or painting anywhere.  But it is landscape painting en plein air that I love best.  There is  nothing like it.

As we are counting the Omer right now, I am also struck by the paintings that have come to completion during Chesed and Gevurah.  Nezach shebe GEvurah—Endurance in Discipline/Strength.  This is an apt description of the daily work of making art in general, and of the work specific to landscape and portrait painting.  Hanging in there through each phase of the process, deciding a thousand things throughout, finally deciding–or accepting—when to stop one project and begin another.  Today is the rest of the 11th day of the Omer.
