The Doodle Project

To be shown at 18 Holden Street. North Adams on

Thursday November 29 from 6pm-9pm.

In 2010 Downstreet Art presented a show of work by local people who found great joy in drawing and painting quietly in their homes.  The show “Local Color” ran for four months.  Inspired by Patrice Bolgen who is a serious doodler, the allocated gallery space was wrapped with 70 feet of 4 feet high paper and everyone passing by was encouraged to doodle on it.  Susan Hall purchased the entire “Grand Doodle”.  However, Susan moved to Florida and was unable to take the doodle with her.   It was decided that the piece should be cut into 6 foot pieces and artists were recruited to develop each piece in their own style and to keep as much of the existing marks as possible.

All pieces will be available at a silent auction with 50% of any proceeds going to the North Adams Food Bank.

Liz Cunningham, Jon Payne, Howard Itzkowitz, Wendy James, Barbara May, Viola Moriarty, Dawn Nelson, Dun Riddell, Wilma Rifkin. Sarah Sutro.

This is a collection of some of my favorite nude sketches primarily from life drawing groups, in particular my Wednesday night group.  The one exception is a seven hour pastel drawing done from life (yup, my model and dear friend stayed in the bathtub for two sessions of four and three hours!).  The sizes of paper and board vary from  12″ x 12″ to 22″ x 30″.  It is available from

Images Cinema–the Gray Wall of Fame–Exhibition Nov 1-30

If you are near or in Williamstown, Massachusetts, please come to the movies at Images Cinema—the films are always the most interesting and top notch…..and this month I have an exhibit on the gray wall.  I’m almost always there at least once a week, so instead of having an opening reception, I hope I’ll see you at the movies!

“This month on the grey wall of fame at Images Cinema:   Regional artist, Viola Moriarty, Still lifes and Figures in the Still life, oil on mdf or birchwood board, selections from recent works, 2011-12. Bold and alive, in both color and painterly brushstrokes, these works are also intimate and quiet, reflecting the personality of the painter herself.  THe collection references her current cancer treatment in the piece titled,  Live Your Life, My Oncologist Says….  Each painting is enigmatic or paradoxical in some way, and inolves a lesson Moriarty set for herself.  Viola Moriarty has had several shows at Images Cinema and is proud to call herself a member.  She has been painting for ten years, and is a 2012-13 recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant Award, and she gratefully acknowledges the foundation’s support for her work.”   —–check it out for the “In the Booth” series!
